(WHAS11) -- President Obama nominated former Senator Chuck Hagel as his next Secretary of Defense Monday. He also appointed his counter-terrorism adviser John Brennan as Director of the CIA. But both still must be confirmed by the Senate.

Chuck Hagel is officially a Republican but Republicans are not thrilled about his nomination and are expected to give him the hardest time in Senate confirmation hearings.

President Obama says former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel is a "leader our troops deserve."
He becomes the first enlisted person and Vietnam veteran to lead the Department of Defense.

Although he is officially Republican he has been heavily criticized by the GOP. They say he is anti-Israel and too soft on Iran. The White House says his views have been misrepresented.

If confirmed, Hagel will replace Leon Panetta who is retiring and Brennan succeeds David Patraeus who resigned in November.

President Obama encouraged Senators to confirm both quickly.
