How much of an upstart is Rand Paul's candidacy for Kentucky's open U.S. Senate seat? Until Thursday, he had never met Kentucky's senior senator, Mitch McConnell.
"The meeting was the first get-together for Rand and Mitch and just made sense that they start a dialogue now," said Paul campaign manager David Adams. "Otherwise it was pretty uneventful."
In an interview with WHAS11 a few hours before the meeting, Paul said he was trying to extend an "olive branch" after McConnell, the Senate Minority Leader, raised money for Paul's GOP rival Trey Grayson. McConnell's office was also aware of Paul's non-commitall answer to a WHAS11 question whether he would support McConnell as Senate Minority Leader.
But, "no fireworks or major announcements yet," Adams continued, "just paving the way toward a productive working relationship to maximize the benefit Kentuckians get from their federal delegation starting in 2011."
