LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Fighting drug abuse might be a never ending battle, but Governor Steve Beshear says the state of Kentucky is making headway against prescription drug abuse.

It's been a year since House Bill One took effect. It was the law that took direct aim at cutting back on illegal prescription drug use.

For the first time in a decade, prescription overdoses are down.

20 pill mill pain clinics have been shut down and prescriptions for the most commonly abused drugs have declined.

Governor Beshear talked about the law's success in Louisville when he was speaking to the Rotary Club on July 25.
