WASHINGTON (WHAS) – These words – “I screwed up royally” – are coming from former CIA director David Petraeus about the extramarital affair that ended his career.
He wrote a letter to Retired Brigadier General James Shelton, his friend and mentor.
Shelton shared the contents of a letter about Petraeus’ affair with biographer Paula Broadwell.
“Dear Jim, if I may in parenthesis, I can’t thank you enough for your note; kind words and support. I can’t tell you how much it all meant. I screwed up royally. I paid the price, appropriately,” Shelton said as he read.
Petraeus and his wife Holly have been married for 38 years and in his letter to Shelton, Petraeus writes that she is “once again demonstrating how incredibly fortunate I was to marry her.”
Shelton said while he is disappointed in Petraeus’ actions, he thinks the former four star general made a one-time mistake.
