(WHAS11) -- The highly anticipated Fancy Farm U.S. Senate candidate showdown of five-term incumbent Mitch McConnell (R)  and Alison Lundergan Grimes (D) has just gotten a lot more interesting.

Late Wednesday night, the picnic's political organizer, Mark Wilson, confirmed that Republican primary candidate Matt Bevin has been invited to speak, after all.  Up until Wednesday night, Wilson had said only sitting elected officials would be on the program.

"(Bevin) has filed his papers to run and will be added to (the) speaking roster," Wilson said in an e-mail.

In a statement released exclusively to WHAS11 Bevin said:

"Fancy Farm is a great and unique Kentucky tradition. I've already met so many energetic and wonderful Kentuckians around the state and I look forward to meeting more and sharing my message of limited government and individual liberty with them."

Meanwhile, it was announced on Wednesday that neither Governor Steve Beshear or Lt. Governor Jerry Abramson will attend the rowdy political speeches in 2013.

2013 marks the 133rd annual Fancy Farm picnic on the grounds of St. Jerome Catholic Church in western Kentucky's Graves County.  Politicians must deal with peristent heckling and political gags during the afternoon stump speeches.

McConnell's campaign has placed robo calls to Republican voters urging them to attend.
