FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is endorsing the son of former Republican presidential candidate and U.S. Rep. Ron Paul in Kentucky's U.S. Senate race.
Palin's endorsement gives eye surgeon Rand Paul an inroad into Kentucky's conservative Republican base that might otherwise be skeptical of an outsider candidate. The younger Paul has never before run for office.
In a statement, Palin says she's proud to support grass roots candidates like Paul. She also says that while there are issues they disagree on, they both agree "it's time to shake up the status quo in Washington and stand up for commonsense ideas."
Paul is running to replace retiring Sen. Jim Bunning. He faces Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson in the May primary election.
