FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Candidates have been chosen for a special election that could give Kentucky Democrats a chance to increase their numbers in the GOP-led state Senate.
The Lexington Herald Leader reported Saturday that Democratic leaders chose former state representative Jodie Haydon to run in a Dec. 8 special election for the 14th Senate District.
He will face state Rep. Jimmy Higdon, R-Lebanon, who seeks to replace former Senate Majority Leader Dan Kelly.
Kelly, a Republican, was appointed last week by Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear to an open circuit court judgeship. Critics said the move appeared to be an attempt to sway the Senate's balance of power and win passage of one of the governor's pet projects: expanded gambling.
