FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Possible presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz predicts Republicans will retake the Senate this year and that "2016 will be even better."

Cruz has continually ducked questions about whether he'll actually run, but he is one of two Texans eyeing White House campaigns. Gov. Rick Perry is the other.

Both addressed Friday's RedState Gathering in Fort Worth, the kind of top-tier conservative event necessary to build national support.

Perry has tried to adopt a more humble, intellectual image since the cowboy bravado of his 2012 presidential bid fizzled.

Cruz, meanwhile, is a tea party superstar, stirring controversy and enraging congressional leaders from both parties.

He was introduced as the "leader of the conservative movement in the United States of America," then repeatedly blasted the Obama administration's "lawlessness."
