RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — In some of the most crucial races for U.S. Senate in this midterm election, Republicans are all about tying Democrats to Obama — especially a health care law that remains wildly unpopular among conservative voters.

And for Democrats? They're trying to make the election about just about anything else, highlighting everything from old personal biographies to problems with local water supplies.

It's a gamble for both parties. Republicans are betting that anti-Obama sentiment won't wane by November, while Democrats hope their hodgepodge of issues will pull voters' attention to more favorable terrain.

It's a political strategy that sometimes gives the campaigns an inside-out feel, with veteran senators running as if they were first-timers without a Washington resume to defend or tout.
