WASHINGTON (AP) — Two darlings of the Republican Party's most conservative wing are throwing their support to the candidate challenging longtime Sen. Thad Cochran in Mississippi's Senate race.
Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and former Sen. Rick Santorum on Thursday tried to rally fellow Republicans behind a state senator, Chris McDaniel, ahead of Tuesday's Senate primary.
McDaniel has become a favorite among conservative activists and outside groups, which have poured millions into the state to help him.
In a radio ad set to run on conservative stations, Palin says McDaniel is, quote, "one of the good guys fighting for us."
Santorum released a statement praising McDaniel as "a proven conservative."
An independent political action committee said a day earlier that former Sen. Trent Lott of Mississippi has made a radio ad backing Cochran.
