COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The daughter of a Democratic state lawmaker has won a chance to replace her father in an Ohio House district held by her parents for about 30 years.
With 95 percent of precincts reporting, Emilia Sykes of Akron had about 63 percent of the vote in her race against Summit County councilman Frank Comunale. Sykes works for Summit County.
Sykes was among several candidates in Tuesday's primary with family ties to seats they are seeking. Her father, Rep. Vernon Sykes of Akron, is term-limited.
Democrat Janine Boyd also is running for a seat held by her term-limited mother, state Rep. Barbara Boyd of Cleveland Heights.
With 6 percent of precincts reporting, Janine Boyd, a Cleveland Heights councilwoman, was running ahead of her primary opponent, attorney Sean Malone.
