COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — An Air Force veteran and Delta Airlines captain from central Ohio wants to challenge U.S. Rep. Steve Stivers for his seat this fall.
Democrat Scott Wharton, of Amanda in Fairfield County, announced his bid Friday. He's a farmer who's driven his John Deere tractor in area parades.
Stivers is a two-term Republican from Upper Arlington, representing Ohio's 15th Congressional District.
Wharton says representatives in Washington are failing regular Ohioans, calling Stivers part of the dysfunction. Wharton calls himself a "no-nonsense individual" who advocates tax fairness, infrastructure investment and worker re-training initiatives.
Stivers is a former state senator and a colonel in the Ohio Army National Guard, where he's spent 28 years.
A Republican spokesman said Stivers has worked to create jobs and is supported across party lines and by unions.
