FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell is earning praise back home for brokering the deal that ended the partial government shutdown and averted a potential default on U.S. debt.

That praise is coming from unlikely corners: Democrats, moderates and even newspaper opinion pages that typically disagree with him.

The Republican is seeking a sixth term. And his decision to work with Democrats suggests a confidence that he can overcome tea party gripes. It also reflects his campaign's belief that he'll ultimately win the primary over a Republican challenger and face a tougher fight with Democrats in the general election.
