CLEVELAND (AP) — Ohio school districts are happy to get their share of casino taxes, but say it won't make up for cuts in state aid.
The state has passed out more than $111 million in casino taxes, mostly to counties, cities and school districts, since the first Ohio casinos opened last year.
According to The Cleveland Plain Dealer (bit.ly/WlA5SO), the latest casino tax distributions went out during the past week.
In suburban Cleveland, Berea (buh-REE'-uh) school officials will use their first check for $142,512 for general operating expenses.
Interim Berea school treasurer Dale Cummins says declining property values and the state's decision to cut reimbursement for phased-out business taxes have cost the district $2.5 million this fiscal year. She says the casino money "doesn't even begin to cover the reductions."
