INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Republican Gov. Mike Pence says his private meeting with the state's new Democratic state schools chief went well and they share some common education goals.
Pence says his nearly hour-long Tuesday meeting with Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz was a good discussion. He tells the Journal Gazette (http://bit.ly/TVYXS2 ) he and Ritz are "both very enthusiastic" about expanding career and vocational opportunities for Indiana high school students.
Ritz defeated Republican incumbent Tony Bennett in November by campaigning against sweeping education changes pushed by Bennett and other top Republicans.
She's the only Democratic statewide office holder in a Republican-controlled legislative and executive branch. But Pence has been welcoming to Ritz during her first days in office and initial talk by lawmakers about making her post an appointed position has receded.
