IRWIN, Pa. (AP) — A prominent supporter of Mitt Romney says President Barack Obama should "learn how to be an American."

Former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu was speaking to reporters in a conference call arranged by Romney's campaign.

He said the nation's economy became "the envy of the world" because of men and women who worked hard to build businesses "from the ground up."

Sununu added, "It is the American way, and I wish this president would learn how to be an American."

When asked to clarify his remarks, Sununu said, "The president has to learn the American formula for creating business."

The comments came on a day when Romney has been focusing on a comment Obama made last week, in which he suggested that government played a role in the success of private enterprise. Romney said Obama's remarks were "insulting to every entrepreneur."
