WASHINGTON (AP) — Tea party candidates have captured Senate seats in Florida and Kentucky, but their hopes were dashed in Delaware.
Florida Republican Marco Rubio prevailed in a three-way race against Democrat Kendrick Meek and Gov. Charlie Crist, who bolted the GOP to run as an independent. Rand Paul won Kentucky.
But Democrat Christopher Coons turned back Christine O'Donnell in Delaware.
O'Donnell upset moderate Republican Rep. Mike Castle in Delaware's primary but her candidacy then stalled amid a string of controversies.
Alabama Republican Sen. Richard Shelby and Maryland Democrat Sen. Barbara Mikulski coasted to new terms. In New Hampshire Republican Kelly Ayotte, a former attorney general who has never run for office before, beat two-term Democratic Rep. Paul Hodes.
