Papa John's delivery driver shot on the job, others being cautious

Last night's shooting of a Papa John's pizza delivery driver raises some concerns.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Hours after a pizza delivery driver was gunned down while on a run in South Louisville, other pizza shops owners are talking to their employees about staying safe on the job.

It happened on Craig Avenue in the Jacobs neighborhood around 7 p.m. Monday night. The driver was rushed to the hospital where he is in stable condition.

"Anything can happen at a moment's notice, you never know the situation,” Bearnos owner, George Timmering said.

It's not the first time this type of assault has happened in Kentuckiana. In early 2015 a Pizza Hut driver was shot while in his delivery car at an intersection. Police called it an attempted robbery.

A few months later, a Spinelli’s driver was carjacked and stabbed on the job and just last year a Papa John's driver was robbed in Jeffersonville.

It’s a scary situation for drivers and shop owners, like George Timmering.

"I have had delivery drivers get robbed before, actually we used to have a store in a rougher end of town and I had a driver get shot at. I looked at the bullet hole where he got shot at on a delivery,” Timmering explained.

Timmering said his policy is simple- no pizza or money is worth your life.

He said, "A pizza's not worth someone getting hurt over and it’s not that much money so you definitely have to have things in perspective- the safety of the drivers, customers, is first over a pizza."

Timmering said his drivers don't deliver to locations where they don't feel safe. If there is a concern, two people go together, he explained.

Papa John’s representatives sent WHAS11 this statement:

"Team member safety is of the utmost importance to Papa John's. We are cooperating with local authorities in their efforts to apprehend those responsible for this attack. Our thoughts are with the driver and his family and we wish him a speedy recovery."

They would not say how or if the shooting is effecting driver policy and procedure in the future.
