Louisville, Ky. (WHAS) – More than 30 million people are living with HIV and AIDS worldwide and Saturday, people took time to recognize the problem.
December 1 marked the 25th anniversary of World AIDS Day.
The White House observed the event by displaying a large red ribbon on the North Portico.
The red ribbon is an international symbol of support for and awareness of the disease.
“It’s not grabbing the attention and the headlines that it used to but it’s still devastating communities and families across the world,” Brad Hampton, Co-chair of the Louisville Commemoration of World AIDS Day said.
30 years into the AIDS epidemic, much progress has been made in treating the disease.
About 50,000 Americans are infected with HIV each year.
Here in Kentucky, Louisville accounts for 46 percent of the HIV/AIDS cases in the state.
