(ABCNews)--  A plane carrying 35 people skidded off a runway at John F. Kennedy International Airport today in New York.

The flight had landed safely and was taxiing to the gate when it skidded into a snow bank as it turned onto a taxiway.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey temporarily halted take-offs and landings at the airport so the runways could be salted and sanded.

Port Authority Police Crash, Fire, Rescue Unit responded and actually had to dig aircraft out of snow.

According to ABC station WABC-TV, the plane, which was being flown by Endeavor Air, was towed to the gate to allow the passengers to get off.

The Port Authority says the incident is under investigation, and the speed of the plane is being reviewed, according to WABC-TV. About two hours after the incident the runways were reopened at the airport.
