NEW ORLEANS - An NOPD officer was shot in the leg with his own gun after a handcuffed suspect being put into a police car was able to grab the weapon from the officer's holster and fire, a police spokesperson said.

The officer was taken to the hospital and is said to be in good condition.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. in the 7000 block of Bullard Avenue.

According to police, officers were responding to a call of a man creating a disturbance inside of a Brother's Food Mart and when they arrived, they said an agitated man, who fit the description of the suspect, approached them. The officers attempted to interview the man and decided to place him in handcuffs as he became more hostile.

As the officers attempted to place the man inside of a police car, he was able to grab a gun from the officer's holster and the gun went off in the process and the officer was struck in the leg.

Police identified the suspect at 41-year-old Damon Jones.

He was booked with disturbing the peace, resisting arrest and aggravated battery on a police officer.
