(WHAS11)—One police department in Iowa is getting new technology to make car chases safer.

Police cruisers are being fashioned with tracking bullets, that can be shot from the front of the vehicle, into the back of the vehicle they are chasing, allowing the officer to pull back from the chase.

Police said they it would allow the person being chased to slow down and act like normal traffic, lessening the chance of an accident.

Police said the suspect do not realize the bullet has been fired into their vehicle, which allows  police to continue to track the vehicle via GPS.

Right now the bullets cost $500 each while the whole system cost $5,000 to install into the vehicle.

Plans are underway to install them in more of their vehicles soon.
