(WHAS11)--The Food and Drug Administration is trying to make sure the food we feed our pets is safe.

The FDA proposed a new rule Friday that requires animal food manufacturers to put policies in place to prevent foodbourne illnesses caused by bacteria, chemicals, and contaminants.

The rule would apply to animal feed as well.

A spokesman says the proposed rule is meant to protect both animals and people, since owners often handle their pets food.
