(WHAS11) -- The eastbound lanes have reopened on I-70 in Hendricks County, Indiana just west of Indianapolis. The westbound lanes are still closed after 40-car pile-up.

Police say 20 of the vehicles were semi-trucks. About a dozen people were sent to the hospital Thursday afternoon. One person is in critical condition.

Three elephants were also caught in the pile-up. The trailer transporting them slid off the road.

Police say the elephants were calm and their animal trainer had them under control.

The trainer unloaded them from the trailer so they could get it back on the interstate. Then they continued on their journey.

We do not know where they were going.
