TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Republican-turned-Democrat Charlie Crist's opponents are questioning whether his political conversion is believable as the former governor seeks his old job with his new party.

Crist was a lifelong Republican until 2010, when he abandoned the Republican Senate primary and ran as an independent. He registered as a Democrat less than two years ago and last November announced his run for governor.

Now former Senate Democratic Leader Nan Rich says Crist can't be trusted to do as he says. Rich is Crist's opponent in the Aug. 26 Democratic primary.

And Republican Gov. Rick Scott also said the political conversion isn't believable.

But Crist said he was a moderate Republican and is now a moderate Democrat and that it was the GOP that changed — not him.
