SKOKOMISH -- A 13-year-old boy faces manslaughter charges in the shooting of his 14-year-old best friend. The boy appeared in court Wednesday and was released to home detention.

The Sheriff's Office said Wednesday that the 13-year-old and the 14-year-old victim had been playing together all day when they decided to play with rifles found inside a residence in the 100 block of N. Twana Court.

According to the Sheriff's Department, the 13-year-old told officers that he pointed the rifle at the other boy and fired but he didn't think the gun was loaded.

The 14-year-old was shot in the chest. The 13-year-old tried to help but when he couldn't he ran to the neighbor’s house and asked them to call 911.

The 14-year-old died at the scene.

The Sheriff's Office said when the 13-year-old heard that his friend was dead, he broke down sobbing uncontrollably.

The 13-year-old was taken into custody, and after a court appearance Wednesday was released to home detention.

Prosecutors say it's not yet clear who owns the rifles or why the boys were able to get their hands on them.

The alleged shooter told deputies he was aware of firearms safety and had been taught never to play with guns.
