FAIRFIELD, Calif. (AP) — Fire crews are trying to contain a five-alarm brush fire that has destroyed at least two homes in the Northern California town of Fairfield.

The blaze that broke out Friday afternoon has prompted evacuations as it sends huge plumes of black smoke billowing into the air.

KTVU reports (http://bit.ly/1p154nb ) that it's not known exactly how many homes have been destroyed in the community, which is about 40 miles northeast of San Francisco.

The California Highway Patrol says the fire is causing traffic delays on westbound Interstate 680. Motorists are being advised to take Interstate 780 to Interstate 80 instead.
