FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — A Democratic state senator from western Kentucky says he won't run for re-election this year.
Sen. Jerry Rhoads of Madisonville said Friday his three Senate terms have been among his most rewarding experiences. But he says he wants to spend more time with his family, including his eight grandchildren.
Rhoads is a member of the Senate Democratic leadership team as minority whip.
Rhoads' district includes Hopkins, Muhlenberg, Ohio and Butler counties.
The seat could become a target for Republicans looking to pad their Senate majority. In recent years, the GOP has picked up several legislative seats in conservative western Kentucky, once a Democratic stronghold.
Republicans outnumber Democrats 23-14 in the Senate, with one independent who caucuses with the GOP.
