FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Sen. Rand Paul has endorsed freshman Rep. Thomas Massie's bid for a second term in a northern Kentucky district.
Paul's endorsement is a pre-emptive effort to boost his fellow conservative Republican.
Massie hasn't yet drawn an opponent in this year's election in the 4th District, but Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce President Steve Stevens has said he's considering a primary challenge against Massie.
Paul said in his endorsement on Friday that Massie is "one of the most principled conservatives" in Congress.
Paul told reporters late last year that he thinks primaries are good for Republicans.
Paul, a potential GOP presidential candidate in 2016, has endorsed Senate Republican Mitch McConnell's bid for a sixth term this year. McConnell is being challenged in the GOP primary by Louisville businessman Matt Bevin.
