HEIDRICK, Ky. (AP) — Police say a southern Kentucky man has been fatally shot after he allegedly broke into a vehicle and was confronted by its owner and a neighbor.
State police told WYMT-TV (http://bit.ly/19mDjHY) that a resident in Knox County says he saw someone break into his neighbor's van. The resident called 911 to report the burglary, and then called his neighbor to alert him.
Police said the men then got guns and confronted the suspect.
"Once the neighbors contacted this man he was inside the van that he'd broken into," said Trooper Shane Jacobs.
They said they got him out and tried to hold him until officers arrived.
"They advised they contacted 911 and police were on the way. He attempted to flee the scene and there was an altercation and that time a gunshot was fired," Jacobs said.
Police have not released the names of those involved. An investigation is ongoing. No charges were immediately filed after the shooting early Friday.
Jacobs said police are still trying to find out more about the suspect.
"Trying to figure out why he was here, what connectors he had to this area, find out what happened," he said.
