PORTLAND – A bus carrying the junior varsity football team for Central Catholic High School in Oregon caught on fire on Highway 26 westbound near the Jefferson Street on ramp Thursday evening.

Portland Fire & Rescue responded and worked to extinguish the flames around 5 p.m. There were no reported injuries on the Blue Star charter bus.

"I just told them, we're on fire and get out, and they did," said bus driver Jody Fritz. "(I heard a) couple of explosions in the back, fire coming out of the sides. (I) pulled over after the explosions."

There were no injuries.

The bus was transporting the team from Central Catholic High School en route to play Sheldon High School at Hillsboro Stadium.  The game was scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.

An official at Central Catholic school said the game against Sheldon was canceled.

The bus is a Prevost H-series bus with an experienced driver, the company said.  It seats 56 passengers.
