SEYMOUR, Ind. (AP) — Authorities say four police officers have rescued a southern Indiana man who was lying injured next to his burning SUV after it struck a bridge abutment on a rural Jackson County road.
The Courier Journal reports (http://cjky.it/16Z4Xfz ) that 30-year-old Christopher T. Nichols of Seymour was lying within a foot of his burning SUV when police arrived about 2:30 a.m. Saturday.
State police say troopers Chris Lockman and Jared Black dragged Nichols away while Seymour police officers Bart Bevers and Crystal Schapson used fire extinguishers on the blaze.
Nichols' clothes were on fire and he had severe burns. He was taken to a local hospital and later airlifted to Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis.
Lockman also suffered minor burns.
Seymour is about midway between Indianapolis and Louisville, Ky.
