SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) — A pair of persistent wildfires continue to burn in the hills and mountains around Interstate 5 north of Los Angeles, although firefighters are slowly getting the upper hand on both.

A 712-acre fire that broke out Friday, briefly threatening an elementary school and about 20 homes, is about 75 percent contained. The fire has been moving toward Castaic (kas-TAY'-ihk) Lake.

A larger fire that broke out Wednesday in rugged terrain near Frazier Park is 70 percent contained after consuming some nearly 4,500 acres. That blaze is not threatening any homes or buildings but fire officials say fully containing it will be a long, difficult task because it was burning in such a hard-to-reach area.

Crews are being helped by relatively mild temperatures, but the terrain and unpredictable winds have been working against them.
