ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (AP) — The owners of a home-based Derby hat business are getting noticed for their appealing designs and reasonable prices.

The owners of Hataritaville, Terri Pfeiffer and John Thompsett, have been too busy in recent years to travel from Elizabethtown to attend the annual horse race.

Pfeiffer began decorating Derby hats after a customer at an art studio asked if they made them.

She customizes them by consulting clients about what they like and making hats to their specifications.

"It's a personal thing," she said. "A hat's not something that some people think is a necessity, but if they're going somewhere, they want to make the right decision."

One of their hat designs was worn to the Derby by Vicki Gunvalson of TV's "Real Housewives of Orange County," The News-Enterprise (http://bit.ly/18eJyx8 ) reported.

Pfeiffer and Thompsett typically sell their hats for $80 or $100. Pfeiffer says she hopes to one day open a small store, but for now their business is doing just fine.

Morgan Ramirez and her mother, Charlotte Ramirez, of Elizabethtown, smiled as Morgan posed for pictures wearing some of the hats displayed in Jewelry & Bridal on Saturday. The Elizabethtown store sells Pfeiffer's hats.

Morgan Ramirez rushed to a nearby mirror to check the look of the hats she tried on for fun.

"I think they're gorgeous," she said. "I wasn't going to buy one."

She left with a wide-brimmed hat in a box and plans to find a dress to go with the accessory and a place to wear it.
