TIGARD, Ore. – Two cats were rescued after they were left to suffocate in a “Rubbermaid-like” container in a dumpster at a Oregon PetSmart Saturday morning.
A store employee discovered the cats in a nearly-new sealed blue plastic tub in the dumpster on top of trash. The employee who found the young cats was reportedly taught by his mother to “always look in a closed container, if he found one."
The cats were safe and taken to a shelter in Sherwood, according to a spokeswoman with the Cat Adoption Team.
One of the cats is a 1-year-old brown tabby that may be pregnant. The other is an orange tabby that is about 2 to 3 years old.
Animal abandonment is against the law in Oregon and can be punishable by 6 months in jail and a $2,500 penalty.
