CHICAGO -- The Cook County Medical Examiner's office says a 6-month-old girl shot with her father has died of her wounds.
Chicago police say Jonathan Watkins was standing outside a minivan Monday attending the child when a gunman approached and opened fire. Watkins was shot in the side and buttocks, and suffered a graze wound to his face. The child, Jonylah Watkins, was shot five times.
The medical examiner's office says Jonylah died around 6 a.m. Tuesday.
Watkins is being treated at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where police say he is in critical condition.
Family members said they had no idea why Watkins and Jonylah were shot, and dismissed as untrue police assertions the father has gang ties.
Chicago police are searching for the gunman and scouring the area for any security camera footage that might have captured the suspect’s vehicle fleeing.
Witnesses described it as a blue conversion van.
The shooting took place around 1 p.m. Monday in the Woodlawn area of Chicago’s South Side.
