SHELBYVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A predawn fire has destroyed a building in downtown Shelbyville and heavily damaged another one as firefighters worked to keep the blaze from spreading.

Shelby County fire district spokesman James Mulcahy says the fire spread Wednesday through a building that housed a Mexican restaurant, a counseling center and a couple of apartments on the second floor. He says part of the burned building collapsed, heavily damaging a second-hand store next door.

Mulcahy says the fire appears to be under control, but a downtown street will be blocked for some time because of debris.

He says no injuries are reported, but a handful of people had to flee the apartments.

City and county firefighters were battling the blaze that was reported about 4:40 a.m. EST in the central Kentucky town.
