LONDON, Ky. (AP) — The Laurel County Sheriff's Office has begun a program to patrol homes where owners are away.

WYMT-TV (http://bit.ly/XW46EI ) in Hazard reported the agency has invited people who will be away from their homes to notify the department and report what days the home will be unoccupied. The sheriff's office will step up patrols in those areas. The information can be emailed to the sheriff's office at lso1133(at)windstream.net.

Sheriff's spokesman Gilbert Acciardo says it makes sense to check vulnerable homes, since deputies are already patrolling.

Officials say residents of Laurel County asked for the program because of an increase in break-ins.
