WESTWOOD, Ky. (AP) — Residents in eastern Kentucky have approved a utility tax that will help provide financial support for schools.
The Fairview Independent school board in Boyd County approved the 3 percent tax on utilities in December saying it could bring in between $300,000 and $700,000 annually and help pay to make needed improvements and additions to facilities. A group opposing the tax successfully petitioned for a referendum on the issue.
The Independent (http://bit.ly/VvByVL) reports it passed with 549 people voting to keep the tax and 512 voting to repeal it.
The newspaper reports the result was a surprise because two previous attempts to institute a similar tax had failed at the polls.
