PIKEVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Officials in Pike County are offering free smoke alarms to residents in response to a deadly fire that killed four children and their father.

The Kiddie Company donated nearly 250 smoke detectors for residents in the county. Officials say residents need just to contact their local fire department by phone, e-mail or Facebook and ask for an alarm. Firefighters have offered to install the smoke alarms in homes.

Doug Tackett, Pike County Emergency Services Director, says the free smoke detectors are a step toward safety and education.

The Jan. 9 fire in the Jonancy community killed four children, their father and severely injured the children's mother. Officials said the home did not have a smoke detector.
