FLORENCE, Ky. (AP) — A northern Kentucky sheriff wants motorists to know if the keys are locked in the car, a deputy can't come to the rescue.

Boone County Sheriff Michael Helmig says deputies will no longer be dispatched to aide motorists in Florence who can't get into their vehicles. Helmig told The Kentucky Enquirer (http://bit.ly/UCAy08 ) the number of calls from the city was growing while staffing at the department stayed the same.

The new policy took effect Jan. 1.

In 2012, the Boone County Sheriff's Department responded to 5,248 lockout calls. Sheriff's Department spokesman Tom Scheben said about half of those calls originated in Florence.

The sheriff's department will continue to offer lockout service in Union and Walton and in all unincorporated portions of Boone County, including Burlington, Hebron and Petersburg.
