LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Louisville football fans have gathered at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium to welcome home the Sugar Bowl champion Cardinals.
WLKY-TV (http://bit.ly/RvpcfA ) reports that planes carrying some members of the team and staff began arriving in Louisville early Thursday afternoon.
Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer was among those greeting the team. He brought along a special plaque proclaiming Louisville "Sweet City, USA" in honor of the Cards' 33-23 win over Florida on Wednesday night in New Orleans.
About 15 to 20 players and some staff were on the buses that rolled into the stadium parking lot before 4 p.m.
Thursday's gathering wasn't a formal university celebration, but that's something that is expected in the future.
