LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Homicides in Jefferson County increased 28 percent this year and marked the first increase in homicides in Louisville since 2007.

The Courier-Journal reports (http://cjky.it/UDRiWK ) the number of people killed this year through Sunday was 69, up from 54 people killed in the county in 2011. The homicide rate had been steadily decreasing since 2007 when 82 people became victims of violence.

Lt. Barry Wilkerson, head of the Louisville Metro Police homicide unit, said he can't attribute the increase to any specific factor, but said homicide rates can be cyclical and there were a couple of multiple shootings this year.

Roughly four out of five homicides in the county were the result of shootings.
