ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (AP) — A central Kentucky woman has been sentenced to 35 years in prison after pleading guilty to killing a toddler in her care.
The News-Enterprise (http://bit.ly/WbQ8A3) reports 28-year-old Ashley N. Chapman of Vine Grove must serve 20 years before she is eligible for parole.
Chapman has said she took drugs while watch 2-year-old Layla Johnson and does not remember how the child was injured. She did not seek medical attention for Johnson, who died of a head injury four days after being taken by relatives to a hospital.
Prosecutors have said the girl's death was not an accident but "a brutal crime."
During her sentencing on Thursday, Judge Ken Howard remarked to Chapman that here was "no understanding what you did."
