WALTON, Ky. (AP) — The Boone County Water District has fired its general manager, who was recently sworn in as mayor of the small northern Kentucky town of Walton.
The Kentucky Enquirer (http://bit.ly/TUT9Gf) reports that the water district held a special meeting on Tuesday and took the action against Phil Trzop (TER'-zop).
Trzop is facing a criminal charge of abusing public trust in relation to his position with the water district. He has pleaded not guilty and says he has no plans to step down from the elected position of mayor.
Police said they arrested Trzop on Nov. 16 after he scrapped metal from the utility and allegedly kept some and gave some to employees as Christmas bonuses. Police say about $34,000 worth of metal was scrapped, but only $24,000 has been accounted for.
