BENTON, Ky. (AP) — Jury selection in the trial of a Paducah woman charged with murder and driving under the influence is set to begin Wednesday.

The Paducah Sun and WPSD-TV report that Marshall County Circuit Judge Dennis Foust declined on Monday to grant a motion to change the venue for the trial, which would have delayed proceedings.

"We're hopeful of trying to sit a jury here in Marshall County," Foust said during the hearing.

The attorney for 20-year-old Tiffany Pittman asked for the change, noting that 15 potential jurors or their friends out of a pool of 80 had signed an online petition started by the victim's family for stricter DUI laws. As of Monday afternoon, the site had nearly 600 signatures.

Pitmann's lawyer, Josh Hitch, argued that was too many, but prosecutor Mark Blankenship said the 15 can be stricken and still leave a pool of 65 people to choose from.

Pittman is accused of killing 46-year-old Jimmy Harper, who was hit head-on last year while driving to work.

Harper's son, Dallas, said the judge's decision was a relief.

"I think the defense is trying to prolong this, thinking we'll give up," he said. "No outcome will bring my Dad back but it's important people don't forget him."
