WALTON, Ky. (AP) — A northern Kentucky mayor says he doesn't have plans to step down after being charged with abuse of public trust.

The Boone County sheriff's office says the charges against Walton Mayor Phil Trzop (TER'-zop) relate to his employment as manager of the Boone County Water District. Police say he used cash from scrap metal sales to give Christmas bonuses to employees, but kept some of it.

Trzop was suspended Saturday from his job at the Boone County Water District. He told The Kentucky Enquirer (http://bit.ly/Q8dt60) that he does not at this time have plans to resign as mayor.

He was elected on Nov. 6 to fill an unexpired term and was sworn in six days later — four days before his arrest. The term lasts through the end of 2014.
