PHOENIX -- It's hard to imagine why anyone would want to hurt puppies.

“There was one female and three males,” Maricopa County, Ariz. Animal control spokesperson Audie Greybear said.

Plus one more not believed to be a part of the same litter, but all tossed with their mom in the middle of a busy road near 51st avenue and McDowell.

“The police report did say that they were thrown from a moving vehicle,” Greybear said.

Mom was hit and killed, but the pups were scooped up before getting hit and brought to the Maricopa County Animal Care Center.

“Unfortunately this is an everyday occurrence and a lot of our Maricopa County citizens have brought in animals that they've picked up off the freeway, off the roads and they have reported to us that they have seen these particular animals thrown from a moving vehicle,” Greybear said.

The pups will be checked out by vets early this week then more than likely be available right after for adoption. As for the previous owner, police are now on the hunt for a black tow truck.

“They do face animal cruelty charges and that is determined by Sheriff Arpaio with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office,” Greybear said.
