NEW YORK (AP) — The demeanor of the suspect in the mass movie theater shooting in Colorado quickly became part of the story during his first court appearance.

James Holmes said nothing and displayed little emotion Monday as his lawyer did all the talking for him.

Behavioral medicine assistant professor Jeffrey Gardere at the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York says there may be a good reason for Holmes' various expressions.

He says it's possible Holmes is emotionally wiped out, that there's some psychotic process going on or he's trying to make himself look worse than he really is — or maybe a combination of all three.

Gardere says it's also possible he has a personality disorder that makes him claim to be the Joker.
