NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Officials have lifted the "ground stop" at New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport.

Flights couldn't take off or head for the airport because of a report of smoke in the control tower's elevator shaft Tuesday. The smoke is gone.

However, Federal Aviation Administration deputy assistant administrator Laura Brown says air controllers are managing air traffic at an alternate site.

They're expected to return to their normal posts in the tower shortly.

The "ground stop" has caused flight delays around the country.
